Croatia

The Republic of Croatia is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. Its capital Zagreb. Croatia has an area of 21,851 square miles and a population of 4.28 million. The official language is Croatian.

For nearly two centuries was Croatia a kingdom, which was constituted by the first king Tomislav. In the final days of World War I in 1918, the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, independent from Austria-Hungary, was proclaimed in Zagreb and was afterwards merged into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Most of the Croatian territory was incorporated into the Nazi-backed client-state in World War II after the invasion of Yugoslavia. This led to the development of a resistance movement and the creation of the Federal State of Croatia. Croatia became independent on October 8, 1991. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully for four years following the declaration.

The Order of the Iron Trefoil is the highest military decoration of the Independent State of Croatia. The decorations was instituted on December 27, 1941 and was conferred upon military personnel in recognition of outstanding service and leadership resulting in success against the enemy.
