Central African Republic
The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It’s bordered by Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. The capital city and largest city is Bangui. In the Central African Republic live 4.5 million people. The country has two official languages, French and Sango.
The earliest period of settlement in the Central African Republic began around 10,000 years ago, when nomadic people first began to settle, farm and fish in the region. In the late 1800s, the Central African Republic was a colony of France and Germany. In the late 19th century, France ruled the country as a colony. After gaining independence in 1960, the Central African Republic was ruled by a series of autocratic leaders, including an abortive attempt at a monarchy. In 1990, the population demanded a democracy, which led to the first multi-party democratic elections in 1993. The Central African Republic Bush War started in 2004 lasting until December 2012, despite two peace treaties being signed in 2007 and 2011. The war lead to ethnic and religious cleansing of the Muslim minority and massive population displacement in 2013 and 2014.
The Order of Central African Merit is the highest title and is conferred upon Central Africans in recognition of meritorious service rendered in the domains of humanitarian aid, economics, and social services. It may also be awarded to foreigners, but only under exceptional circumstances.
