A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Duke Karl Günther, with the circular inscription ‘KARL GÜNTHER FÜRST Z. SCHWARZB. SONDERSHAUSEN’. The reverse features the inscription ‘FÜR RETTUNG AUS GEFAHR’ (‘for rescue from danger’), surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. The Life Saving Medal was instituted in 1868 by Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I. It was conferred upon individuals who risked their own lives to save others from life-threatening danger.
In 1880, Prince Karl Günther became the ruler of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the medals were altered to feature his image on the obverse.
