The original name of the General Medal of Merit is "Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen in Bronze zum Verdienste 1914 mit Schwerterspange".

The medal with sword clasp features a leftward-facing profile of Wilhelm Ernst circumscribed by name and title on the obverse.

The reverse features a central inscription of “DEM VERDIENSTE 1914” inside of an oak leaf wreath.
