History

The Dahomey Expedition Medal was created on November 24, 1892 and was awarded to Officers, soldiers, and sailors who participated in the Dahomey Campaign in 1892. A total of 2065 Medals were awarded.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic, Fatherland.”

The Monnaie de Paris made the official medals, however private manufacturers were permitted to manufacture miniature versions. These miniatures could not exceed 25mm and could not bear the markings of the Monnaie de Paris (cornucopia, fasces).
