The Order of Ban Jelačić was established on 10 March 1995.
Count Josip Jelačić von Bužim (16 October 1801 – 20 May 1859) was the Ban of Croatia between 23 March 1848 and 19 May 1859. He was a member of the House of Jelačić and a noted army general, remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and for his abolition of serfdom in Croatia.
The Order of Ban Jelačić is awarded to officials, officers and commanders of the Croatian Armed Forces units for extraordinary military services in the establishment and development of the armed forces, and for the exceptionally successful command of their units.
The badge of the Order of Ban Jelačić is made of silver, it is oval shaped, 50 by 45 mm. In the centre is a circle enamelled in the colours of the Croatian coat of arms on which is placed a medallion of gilded silver. The medallion bears the bust of Ban Jelačić showing the left half-profile. Around it runs the inscription „BAN JOSIP JELAČIĆ“. At the bottom of the medallion is a pair of crossed swords.
On the reverse is the inscription written in two lines „Republika Hrvatska“ encicircled by three-stranded braiding.
The small decoration ribbon of the Order of Ban Jelačić is a 35 by 14 mm ribbon made of silk moire rep in the colours of the national flag (red – white – blue) to which is fastened the miniature of the medallion, 14 mm in diameter.
The miniature of the Order of Ban Jelačić is a miniaturised forging of the medallion of the Order, 17 mm in diameter, suspended from a 12 mm wide ribbon in the colours of the national flag (red – white – blue).
The Order was designed by Kruno Bošnjak, and made by Applied Arts Workshop, Zagreb, Croatia.
The box for the Order is blue with the golden Croatian coat of arms and inscription written in two lines „Republika Hrvatska“ on the cover of the box.
When the Order of Ban Jelačić is presented , beside the decoration itself the written certificate is also given. The certificate is signed by the President of the Republic of Croatia.
