Following the death of Emperor Franz I on March 2, 1835, his son, Archduke Ferdinand Karl Leopold ascended the throne as Emperor Ferdinand I. On September 1838, Ferdinand I was crowned King of Bohemia and of Lombardo-Veneto. He was already the King of Hungary as of September 28, 1830. In August 1838, the emperor accepted Tyrol’s formal obeisance in Innsbruck. This offered the emperor the loyalty of Tyrol’s estates and the special privileges of the provincial government of the principality and earldom.
On August 12, 1838, the emperor instituted a medal for all Tyrolean soldiers and inhabitants who paid homage.
The silver medal was designed by Josef Daniel Bohm. The obverse inscription is FERDINAND KAISER VON OESTERREICH and the reverse inscription is ANDENKEN AN DI HULDIGUG 12 AUGUST 1838. It was worn on a green and white trifold ribbon.
