Austria
Austria (Capital: Vienna) is a landlocked country in Central Europe bordering Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, Germany and Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east and Slovenia and Italy to the south. Austria has 9 federal states – Vienna, Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg. The country encompasses an area of 83,871 square km and houses 8.4 million people. Austria, along with neighboring Switzerland, is the winter sports capital of Europe. The government of Austria is a federal parliamentary republic. The Austrian flag is one of the oldest national flags in the world and it’s also the country where first postcards were issued. German is the official language of Austria. However, there are some other local official languages as well, including Slovene, Hungarian, and Croatian. Most of the people of Austria speak Bavaria, which is a dialect of the German language.
In MedalBook, Austria is divided into the Imperial and the Republic time periods. For more information, see the time period’s folder.
