This medal was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph I on December 21, 1848 and formally instituted in 1849.
The medal was conferred upon loyal Tyrolean citizens who had mobilized in formal companies to suppress the revolt and defended Austria in 1848. These individuals secured the borders set out in the ‘Landlibell’ of 1511.
The medal was designed by Konrad Lange. The reverse inscription reads DEM TIROLER LANDES VERTHEIDIGER 1848 meaning “for the Tyrolean Defence, 1848.” and below MIT GOTT FUR KAISER UND VATERLAND meaning “with God for Emperor and Fatherland.” It is worn on a green and white ribbon.
