The cross was designated by Emperor Franz Joseph in March 1916, however, he died on November 21, 1916. The cross was therefore executed by Emperor Karl, to reward the military personnel that had been working closely with Emperor Franz Joseph in the War Office during World War I.
This cross was a distinction to reward the extraordinary service and faith of these Generals, Officers, and military Officials. While it was originally planned to wait to award these individuals at the end of the war, after two years of ongoing battles, it was deemed necessary to reward them sooner than later.
This is very rare award with only 26 crosses awarded.
The obverse inscription MILITANTIBUS A LATERO MEO translates to “for him who fights at my side”.
