The Medal for Battle of Bailén was established in 1808 by the Supreme Junta of the Kingdom of Spain on behalf of Ferdinand VII who was imprisoned by the French army at that time. The Medal was awarded to Spanish forces who defeated Napoleonic troops at the Battle of Bailén on July 19, 1808.
The Battle was the first Spanish victory over Napoleonic forces in Spain, and it was the first defeat of the Napoleonic army in open field. The battle was contested between the Spanish Army of Andalusia, led by Generals Francisco Castaños and Theodor von Reding, and the Imperial French Army's II corps. The Medal was awarded to all Spanish soldiers who participated at the Battle who were around 30.000 men.
The I Class Medal was awarded to Chiefs and Generals, the II Class Medal was for Officers, white III Class Medal was awarded to enlisted men.
This Medal was the first Spanish award instituted in recognition of services rendered during the Peninsular War.
Some Medals may feature oval and round shapes; the suspension may vary between crowns, arms of trophies, or a single ring. The Medal has a plain reverse.
The I Class Medal was granted to the Generals Francisco Javier Castaños, Teodoro Reding, Francisco de Saavedra, and San Martin, among others.
