This medal was conferred for the Defence of the Caucasus, and was established on May 1, 1944. It was awarded for at least three months participation from July 1942 until October 1943 in the defence of the Caucasus area in the southwestern part of the Soviet Union.
The medal is composed of brass, and has two variations. The obverse presents three tanks rolling through a field with a mountain in the background and three planes in the air.
Variation I medals have a separately soldered on ring at 12 o'clock.
Variation II medals were awarded at a later date and the ring at 12 o'clock has been made as a part of the medal. There is a gold wash over the variation II medals.
The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For the Defense of the Caucasus". The obverse also features the Cyrillic script for the USSR. The reverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Our Soviet Motherland".
