A Soviet Medal for the Defence of Sevastopol
A Soviet Medal for the Defence of Sevastopol; Brass, 32 mm, original ribbon, mounted to a five-sided aluminum suspension with pinback, spotting on the reverse, light contact overall, better than very fine.
This medal was conferred for the defence of Sevastopol, on December 22, 1942. It was awarded approximately 50,000 times.
This medal is made of brass, and all of the "defence of" medals have the same reverse. The obverse shows the torsos of a soldier and a sailor, facing left with an anchor below and cannon tops above.
Variation I medals have a separately soldered ring at 12 o'clock.
Variation II medals were awarded at a later date and have a thick gold wash on the surface.
The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For the Defense of Sevastopol". The reverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Our Soviet Motherland".
