Russia, Imperial. An Order of St. George, IV Class, House of Romanov in Exile, c.1930
(Орден Святого Великомученика и Победоносца Георгия 4 степени). Instituted 26 November 1769 by Catherine II (the Great). Constructed of gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Cross Pattée with white enameled arms, the obverse with a central white enameled medallion bearing a silvered depiction of Saint George slaying a dragon, the reverse with an analogous red enameled medallion bearing a gilt Cyrillic monogram of “СГ” for “СВЯТОГО ГЕОРГИЯ” (“SAINT GEORGE”), the twelve o’clock arm with an integral loop and suspension ring connecting to a period correct replacement ribbon, the suspension ring marked “BRONZE”, measuring 40.15 mm (w) x 45.15 mm (h), some tarnishing and flecking of enamels evident, in better than very fine condition.
This Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award. It was conferred upon those who served the state for at least 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contributions to their professions.
The Non-Christians version of this badge features the image of the Imperial Eagle.
