The Order of Merit of Tuvalu was founded on October 1, 2016, on the 38th anniversary of Tuvaluan independence.

On October 30, 2017, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received the award in recognition of their visit to Tuvalu as part of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
