The INTERFET Medal is awarded to recognise members of the Australian Defence Force who rendered 30 days of service or performed 30 sorties during the INTERFET campaign in East Timor. The INTERFET (International Force East Timor) campaign was an Australian-led multinational task forces that aimed to restore peace and order in East Timor.
Potential recipients must have served between 16 September 1999 and 10 April 2000 in East Timor or on the sea off the coast of East Timor at a distance of 12 nautical miles or less.
The obverse of the medal features the outline of a dove holding an olive branch in its beak. The inscription ‘INTERNATIONAL FORCE EAST TIMOR’ runs along the interior circumference of the medal. The reverse of the medal is blank for the recipient’s name and features the inscription ‘TOGETHER AS ONE FOR PEACE IN EAST TIMOR’ along the interior rim. The Federation Star surmounts the metal and attaches to a bar ribbon suspender.
Although Australia established the Medal, it has invited other nations to honour their personnel with the INTERFET Medal.
