A circular medal constructed of silver and bronze gilt, the obverse features a red enamel five-pointed star with a green enamel cedar tree in the center encompassed by a green enamel open-ended laurel wreath tied with a blue enamel bow at the bottom, the top point of the star is inscribed in Arabic with LEBANON, the star is superimposed over a ribbed background encompassed by a green enamel wreath tied with a blue enamel ribbon at the bottom, weighing approximately 255 grams.
The Order of Merit was initially established by French Government Mandate on January 22, 1922, but was retained and modified following Lebanon's Independence by the Code of Decorations Decree on June 12, 1959. On December 18, 1943, the colours of the ribbon were changed to represent the colours of the Lebanese flag.
The Order is conferred in 4 Classes, plus an Extraordinary and Grand Cordon Class, in recognition of outstanding service to the Lebanese government, exemplary acts of courage of high moral value, or for devotion to duty to the state. Long-standing public establishments and foreigners may also be eligible for the award.
The Extraordinary Class was added to the Order in 1958. The Extraordinary Class Decoration is conferred upon heads of state and is worn with a red coloured sash and issued with a Breast Star.
The obverse features the word "Lebanon" in Arabic.
There may be multiple versions of the Extraordinary Class Decoration which vary by inscription and composition, but more research is necessary.
