Iran, Empire. An Order of Arts and Science, IV Class Medal
An eight-armed star in bronze gilt, with clusters of three thin rays in each arm, the obverse centre bearing a period silvered Persian lion, the reverse is plain, measuring 52.56 mm (w) x 53.20 mm (h), presenting minor oxidation across the star and loss of gilt, suspended by an original red chest ribbon, fine.
The Order of Arts and Science was initially instituted during the Qajar period in 1851. The Order is believed to have been modified during the Pahlavi reign. The Order was conferred by the Minister of Education in 4 Classes to Iranian nationals in recognition of substantial scientific or educational service towards the advancement of Iran. Foreigners who were approved by Iranian or other appropriate authorities were also eligible for the award. It is believed that the Order was often presented to the recipient on New Year celebrations or on the 14th day of the month of Mehr in the Persian calendar.
There is a lack of consensus regarding the appearance of the Decoration and the ribbon design and colour.
