The Order of Ali, or Amīr-al-Moʾmenīn, was introduced by Naser-al Din Shah in commemoration of the Qajar recapture of Herat in 1856. The Order may also be known as the Decoration, or Portrait, of the Commander of the Faithful. The award was worn by Shahs during public ceremonies and national festivals. The award was later modified under the Pahlavi dynasty in 1925 and renamed the military Ḏu’l-faqār, or Order of Zolfagher.
The Decoration depicts an image of Imam Ali on the obverse.
