History
Bernardo Castells founded the firm in 1834 in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona. Bernardo later opened a branch on Escudillers 17 and renamed the business "Castells e Hijos". Bernardo died on April 16, 1883, and left behind two children. His son, Genaro Castells Reig, and his daughter, Teresa Castells Reig, would continue their father's business under the name "Hijos de Bernardo Castells". Castells was appointed Purveyor to the Royal Court in 1906 and manufactured the Order of Isabella the Catholic, Order of Naval Merit, Royal And Military Order Of St. Hermenegildo, and the Order of the Red Cross. It is believed that Castells produced all of the Spanish orders at one point. Genaro died on August 12, 1922 and his descendants took over the family business. In the early 1940s, the store at Escudillers 17 was closed and in the 1980s, the headquarters in the Gracia neighborhood was also closed.
