Bronze gilt with white and red enamels, original ribbon, two rivets on reverse, unmarked, very fine condition and very scarce.

History


The Merit Cross for Self-Sacrifice in Wartime was founded by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter and was conferred upon men and women who rendered exceptional care of the sick and wounded as voluntary medical workers. It was also conferred upon individuals who demonstrated self-sacrificing loyalty by volunteering in other capacities to support the German war effort during the First World War.
