History

The Life Saving Medal was founded by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August on February 17, 1848, and it was conferred upon individuals who placed their own life in peril in an effort to rescue another person’s life or property.

In 1902 a bar was introduced for repeated life-saving attempts. It featured the date of the second life-saving attempt. It is uncertain what this bar looked like.
