The Wilhelm's Long Service Cross for Officers was instituted on March 2, 1837 by King Wilhelm IV. The cross was conferred upon Officers who had loyally served in the Hanoverian Army for 25 years. The cross would later be extended to include general auditors, staff auditors and garrison auditors who were permanently employed in the military justice system. The number of years spent at war counted for double.
A total of 400 crosses were awarded in 1837.
