Physical Description and Item Details

A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the bust of King August Ernst encompassed by the inscription "ERNST AUGUST KOENIG VON HANNOVER". Below the neck of the bust is the engraver mark "FICKENSCHER". The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR RETTUNG AUS GEFAHR" (for rescue from danger) within an oak leaf wreath. On a loop for suspension, with a yellow and light blue striped ribbon.

History

The Life Saving Medal was instituted on August 8, 1845 by King Ernst August. The medal was conferred upon individuals who put their own life in peril in order to rescue another person.

The first issue of the medal (1845-1846) features a small head of King Ernst August and bears the engraver name "FICKENSCHER" under the neck of the bust.

The second issue of the medal (1847-1866) features a larger head of King Ernst August and the name "BREHMER F." under the neck.
