A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the coat of arms of Braunschweig, encompassed by the inscription "GOTT ZUR EHR DEM NÄCHSTEN ZUR WEHR". The reverse bears the insignia of the fire department, a helmet with two crossed axes, encompassed by the inscription "FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DIE FEUERWEHR". On a loop for suspension with a blue and yellow striped ribbon.
The Medal of Merit for Fire Fighters was founded by Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg on April 25, 1912. Albrecht was acting as regent of Brunswick at the time.
The medal was conferred upon members of voluntary Fire Brigades who rendered meritorious service for a period of at least 40 years. The medal could also be conferred upon individuals who distinguished themselves by performing an outstanding act or deed.
