History

The China Commemorative Medal was founded by Wilhelm II and was awarded to all Germans, male and female, who had demonstrated loyalty and perseverance while rendering service in Far Eastern military operations.

The Bronze Medals were awarded to Germans who participated in active combat.

The Silver Medals were awarded to Germans who participated in non-combat activities associated with the preparation of German forces, and the shipment of supplies to the Far East.

The Bronze Medal for Combatants’ reverse inscription translates to "To the victorious fighters 1900 China 1901".

The only official manufacturer of the medal was Mayer & Wilhelm from Stuttgart, but there are also versions of the medal made by private manufacturers.

Battle clasps were privately purchased by the veterans, and they could only be worn on the ribbon of a Bronze Medal for Combatants.

The ribbon may feature official clasps associated with Navy combat operations, including: "TAKU", "SEYMOURE-EXPEDITION", "TIENTSIN", "PEKING", "LIANG-HSIANG-HSIEN", “KAUMI”, and "NAN-HUNG-MEN".

The ribbon may feature official clasps associated with Army combat operations, including: "PEITANG-FORTS", “KALGAN”, “HUOLU”, and “FOUPHING”.

The ribbon may feature official clasps associated with Army and Navy combat operations, including: "TSEKINGKWAN", "KITCHOU”, and "HOPHU”.

The ribbon may also have unofficial clasps associated with specific combat operations, including: “TSCHANG TSCHONLING”, "KUANG-TSCHANG", "TONGKU", "CHOUCHOUANG", "NANKUANTO", "LANG-FANG", and "PEITZANG".

The price of the Medal rises with the addition of clasps.

Each clasp adds value to the overall price of the Medal.

The Medal was designed by Walter Schott, but the design itself was Wilhlem II's idea.

The Bronze Medal for Combatants was awarded approximately 50,000 times.
