History

The Proficiency Clasp was instituted in around 1936, and was conferred upon the young members of the BDM who completed a series of tests in the areas of first aid, homecraft, nursing, and physical training, and knowledge of Nazi ideology and geography. All of the aforementioned tests had to be completed successfully in a span of 12 months.

The Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM) or League of German Girls was founded in the 1930s and served as the female equivalent to the Hitler Youth. Following Hitler’s accession to power in 1933, membership in the BDM became mandatory for girls ages 14 to 21.

The Silver Clasp was awarded to the older members of the BDM.
