History

Members of the SS-Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service) were issued a trade insignia that was embroidered with the letters “SD”. The Officer rank insignia was produced out of black cloth and embroidered with aluminium wire. The insignia for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Enlisted Men (EMs) was manufactured out of black cloth and embroidered with silver-grey thread.

This insignia was also worn by SS members who were assigned to the SS-Hauptamt (Main Office).

Members of the SS who had previously been assigned to the secret state police, the Gestapo, and were later transferred to the Sicherheitsdienst, were issued similar insignia that were embroidered with the letters “SD.” However, additionally the insignia was piped with twisted aluminium cord.
