In around 1938 to 1939, evening dress and mess uniforms were introduced for Allgemeine SS personnel.
The evening dress jacket is cut in a similar style to a tailcoat but has no rear tails. The short jacket has silk lapels, three diagonal silver buttons on each side, and two chain-linked closure buttons at the front. The matte silver buttons feature enwreathed SS runes. The reverse hemline of the jacket narrows to a "V" above the rear.
The interior of the jacket may be lined with silk or rayon.
On the right side of the chest, the wearer would attach a breast badge that featured a death's head and the SS motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue”. In addition, collar tabs, shoulder boards, an aluminium cord aiguillette, a sleeve chevron, and a cuff title were all worn with the jacket.
The evening jacket was worn with a white linen waistcoat with three to four silver buttons on the front, as well as a white dress shirt and a bow tie. It was also worn with long black trousers, which featured white piping and an aluminium braid down the exterior pant seam.
For less formal events, the jacket was worn with a black waistcoat.
