The NSDAP flags were located on the right and left side of NSDAP vehicle fenders. Prior to 1939, the flags were used to signify the political level of the vehicle’s user. Post-1939, the flags could also be used to indicate an individual’s specific rank within their political level.
The left flag features the image of a swastika. The right flag features the NSDAP pattern eagle on a background composed of four alternating triangle sections. The left and right section colours reflect the political rank level of the vehicle’s user.
These flags were produced in a square form and a pennant form. The square form is much more common, because the pennant form was only produced from 1937-1938. For flags produced prior to 1939, the lettering is in Gothic style, and the NSDAP pattern national emblem eagle is silver-coloured. Those flags produced after 1939 feature block style letters and the NSDAP pattern national emblem is gold-coloured with the addition of a half wreath or full wreath to the design, depending on the specific political rank.
There are also transitional versions of these flags that were produced post-1939, but retained the used of gothic style letters.
The flags were generally made from embroidered cloth held secure in a metal frame, but wartime products were also composed of metal that was painted with the appropriate design.
