An extremely well preserved example of a Wehrmacht/Kriegsmarine/Luftwaffe Kreta cuff title; constructed of white cotton, with machine embroidered script “Kreta” in lemon-yellow threading, flanked on both sides by Acanthus designs in the same colour; the top and bottom edges ordained with matching horizontally running lemon-yellow braiding; measuring 410 mm x 32 mm; uniform removed but a nearly full-size example, and without soiling; in overall extremely fine quality.
Cuff titles could serve several different purposes. They were used as commemorative or traditions insignia, or identifying the wearer as part of an elite unit. They were also used as career/role insignia. Some cuff titles were awarded to soldiers taking part in certain campaigns, making them the equivalent of a campaign medal. These are more accurately known as sleeve bands.
Cuff titles were mostly worn on the right sleeve, however, there were many exceptions to this rule.
This cuff title was introduced on October 16, 1942. It was worn by soldiers that took part in the Battle for Crete. It is a white band with the yellow Latin letters “Kreta” framed by an acanthus leaf on each side in the same colour, with a yellow top and bottom stripe. It was worn on the left sleeve.
