1st pattern (1939) Großdeutschland Officer's machine woven cufftitle. The cufftitle is on green cotton/rayon material, and features in the center "Großdeutschland" in machine woven silver wire thread, and is bordered with silver thread. The length is approximate 41cm, width approximately 31mm. The reverse displays the silver weave. This is a very rare cufftitle.
Cuff titles could serve several different purposes. They were used as commemorative or traditions insignia, or identifying the wearer as part of an elite unit. They were also used as career/role insignia. Some cuff titles were awarded to soldiers taking part in certain campaigns, making them the equivalent of a campaign medal. These are more accurately known as sleeve bands.
Cuff titles were mostly worn on the right sleeve, however, there were many exceptions to this rule.
This cuff title was introduced on September 15, 1939 for members of the infantry regiment “Großdeutschland”. It is a dark blue-green band with silver-coloured Gothic letters, with a silver-coloured top and bottom stripe. There are also later versions with Sütterlin letters, Latin letters, and versions reading “Inf.-Regt. Großdeutschland”.
