History

The Volunteer Long Service Medal was established by Queen Victoria in 1894. The Silver Medal was awarded to members of Volunteer Forces in recognition of 20 years of service in the ranks. Officers who have provided non-commissioned service are also eligible for the award. In 1989 the Medal was extended to colonial forces. Members of the Honourable Artillery Company are awarded a Medal with a distinct ribbon. The Medal was superseded by the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1908 in the United Kingdom, however, it was awarded until 1930 in some British colonies.

There are multiple versions of the Medal which differ by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch.

The Medal is generally issued named, however unnamed versions are known.
