    The India Diamond Jubilee Medal was instituted in 1897 in commemoration of Queen Victoria's 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne on June 20, 1897. The Silver Medal was presented to civil and military personnel who participated in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in India. Native chiefs in the colony of Natal were also eligible for the award.
