The Western European Union Mission Service Medal was established in 1997 and is also known as the European Union Police Mission Medal. The Silver Medal is awarded to military and civilian personnel serving with the Western European Union forces in operations in former Yugoslavia. Personnel who have served for 30 days or more in former Yugoslavia, or for 90 days or more in Adriatic, Hungary, or Romania are eligible for the award.
The Medal may be awarded posthumously to personnel killed whilst on assignment.
