History

The Ashanti Star was instituted in 1896 and awarded to members of Major General Sir Francis C. Scott’s expedition against the Ashanti Kingdom, also known as the Fourth Anglo-Ashanti War. The expedition aimed to enforce the demand that the Ashanti Kingdom become a British protectorate, which was undermined by King Prempeh who pursued independence and expansion of the Ashanti Empire. The Ashanti Star was also conferred to 3 nursing sisters who part took in the expedition.

The Bronze Star was issued unnamed, except for the members of the 2nd Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment, whose Colonial had his regiment’s Stars engraved at his own expense. It is believed that Princess Beatrice designed the Ashanti Star.

The Star is made from gun metal.
