The Korea Medal was sanctioned by King George VI by Army Order 103 in July 1951 to reward British and Commonwealth forces who took part in the Korean War between July 2, 1950, and July 27, 1953. Service curtailed by death or disability attributed to active duty qualified for the award of the Silver Medal.
There are 3 versions of the Medal which differ by obverse inscription and composition. The first and second versions are composed of cupro-nickel. The first version depicts an obverse inscription that reads, "ELIZABETH II DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REGINA F:D:", while the second version has "BRITT: OMN:" omitted. The third version is issued to Canadian recipients, is composed of silver, and features the obverse inscription, "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA CANADA."
The Silver Medals features an engraving of the recipient's name on the rim. However, a variety of different naming styles were used.
