(Ordine Equestre Civile e Militaire di San Marino). Instituted in 1859. Insignia in silver gilt with blue, white, red and green enamels, mounted to an eight-pointed star base, each star point with five faceted rays, maker marked "ALBERTI & C. Via No. Bixio 4 MILANO" on the reverse cartouche, measuring 72.2 mm (w) x 74.3 mm (h), vertical pinback, crazing evident in the white enamels on the arm of the cross at 6 o'clock, otherwise the enamels are intact, the insignia sitting loose versus the star base, near extremely fine.
This Order is conferred upon civilians for outstanding service to the Republic, as well as meritorious service within scientific, political, humanitarian, and artistic endeavors. The order is presented in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight
The inscription on the reverse of Type I reads "merito militare" or "merito civile" whereas Type II inscriptions on the reverse read "merito civile e militare".
The Grand Officer Breast Star is worn with the Grand Officer's badge.
There are many variations of this Order; some feature a crown.
