This medal was established by King Haakon VII of Norway in commemoration of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1949–1952, and was conferred to the participants of the expedition.
There were a total of 18 medals awarded.
This medal has the exact same design as the King's Medal of Merit in Silver (See NOR109 in Medals & Decorations for more information), but is differentiated by the clasp on it's ribbon. the Maudheim Medal has a clasp that reads "MAUDHEIM 1949-1950" on the ribbon.
The Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition was composed of an international team of scientists and was the first expedition to Antarctica.
