Established by King Oscar II, this Medal is conferred upon all individuals, Norwegian and foreign, children and adults, civilians and military personnel, who have rendered outstanding life saving actions in any aspect of life, and whilst doing so endangered their own lives.

At it's initial institution this Medal was also known as the "Rescue Medal", or "Life Saving Medal".

Until 1905, the Medal came in three classes, Gold Medal (with crown), Silver Medal (with crown), and Silver Medal. Following 1905, there was only two grades, Gold Medal (with crown) and Silver Medal (with crown).

The obverse design features the Royal portrait of the reigning monarch.
