Established by King Haakon VII, in commemoration of his and his wife's, Queen Maud's, coronation in 1906, this Medal was conferred upon the Royal family, royal guests, members of the Royal Court, members of parliament, police men, priests, military officers, and other individuals who had either participated or rendered service for the coronation celebration.
Other coronation medals have existed in regards to the Royal Family of Norway/Sweden, including coronation medals for King Karl XIV in 1818, King Karl XV in 1860, and King Oscar II in 1873, but they were not wearable medals.
When conferred upon women, this Medal was worn on a bow ribbon.
