Hungary, People’s Republic. An Order of the Flag of the Republic, III Class with Case, to F. Otto Mircea
(Magyar Népköztársaság Zászlórendje). Instituted 1956. (1956-1991 issue). Constructed of gilded silver with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an eight-pointed radiant star, with a central raised and enameled Hungarian tri-colour flag, set within gilt laurel branches, the reverse with four visible rivets securing the obverse flag and branches in place, with a raised barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a round catch, the pinback marked “PV” for Magyar Pénzverő (the Hungarian State Mint), with a silver finesse mark indicating 800, measuring 58.98 mm (w) x 58.38 mm (h), weighing 43.8 grams, extremely fine condition.
This Order was conferred in recognition of merit within a range of civil fields, and for meritorious civil services that fostered peace in Hungary and co-operation with other nations.
The Order was amended in 1963 and 1976. In 1963 the IV Class and V Class grades were abolished. While in 1976 a green enamelled laurel wreath was added to the III Class.
The Order was permanently abolished in 1991.
The III Class may also be known as the IV Class.
