This Order was originally founded during the Republic of Hungary in 1948, and re-established with a new design by the Hungarian People’s Republic in 1950.
The Order was conferred to recognize Hungarians for meritorious service and achievements within the field of labour.
In 1953, the National Assembly reduced the Order grades to a single Gold Medal, but it was expanded into three grades again in 1964.
The medals awarded prior to the expansion of the Order in 1964 do not feature enamel on the obverse ribbon at the bottom of the wheat sheaves, but the medals awarded after 1964 do have enamel on the obverse ribbon.
It was discontinued in 1991.
The Silver Medal (1964-1991) was conferred upon 44550 recipients.
See the Hungarian Order of Labour, HUN151, in the Orders of the Republic of Hungary (1944-1949) for more information.
