Physical Description and Item Details

Measuring 427 mm, this dagger features a 278 mm nickel-plated steel blade, with unsharpened edges, remaining bright and crisp, having a very sharp, near perfect needle-like tip. The blade's reverse ricasso is etched with the Original Eickhorn Solingen maker mark, complete with the company's squirrel emblem, and has the TENO eagle insignia etched above tagged GES. GESCH. (gesetzlich geschutzt = registered). This dagger was adopted in 1938, with Eickhorn being the sole manufacturer. The obverse ricasso is numbered "1773", with the blade itself retaining its beautiful crossgraining, with faint scratches, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, natural shine, in extremely fine condition. The black pebbled leather washer at the crossguard junction is in intact and remains supple in texture. The fittings are silver plated and finished in a dark oxidized finish, featuring the TENO eagle insignia on the crossguard, minor contact marks on both sides, exhibiting crisp detail. The trylon orange synthetic grip is smooth, free of chipping but exhibiting two hairline cracks at the pommel end. The pommel exhibits the cogwheel device on both sides, emblematic of TENO, with contact marks and residue in the recessed areas of the insignia. The scabbard is straight and appears without dents, exhibiting a nice pebbling effect, with very light contact marks in the finish on both sides. The throat is relatively thick and is stamped "1773", matching the number engraved on the ricasso and is retained by a single unturned reverse screw, also exhibiting a darker patina on the scabbard at that end. The two bands display the raised three ring pattern, complemented by silvered rings. A fine example of this type of dagger, in extremely fine condition.

History

The Technische Nothilfe (Technical Emergency Help), often abbreviated to TN or TeNo, was founded on September 30, 1919. Its stated purpose was to maintain vital infrastructure and facilities, and protect them during a time of economical and political turmoil. When the economy improved and political tensions became less pronounced during the mid to late 1920s, the TeNo was able to shift its focus to disaster relief, roadside assistance, and general civil defence, including civil air protection. In 1936, the organisation came under the control of the German police as an auxiliary force of the Ordnungspolizei (Order Police). During the war, TeNo units were deployed to virtually all occupied countries and front lines for technical support.

Sidearms were introduced in November 1938. All blades were manufactured by the company Carl Eickhorn from Solingen. On every blade’s reverse is a TN inspection mark, and a serial number on the blade’s obverse as well as the throat of the scabbard.

The Leaders Dagger was worn by ranks Zugführer and above. It is 420mm in length. It shows the TN national emblem on the crossguard and cogwheel on the pommel. The colour of the plastic grip varies from orange to white.

The dagger came with a 230mm silver-coloured portepee. It was worn suspended by black leather hangers for the service uniform. The hangers for the dress uniform have two gold-coloured stripes and fittings for Chef der TN and Landesführer, all other ranks wore silver-coloured stripes and fittings with an old silver finish.
