In 1944, the Waffen-SS introduced an all camouflage uniform with a tunic that was cut similarly to the standard M43 tunic.
The M44 Camouflage Tunic was a non-reversible jacket intended to be used on its own or as an overgarment during the cold winter months. The tunic features a fall collar that can be buttoned up to the neck, four large pockets without pleats, belt hook suspenders with two access holes, and adjustable cuff vents.
Early examples of the tunics were produced from leftover cotton duck material that were used in the manufacturing of camouflage smocks. The material is reversible and features patterns such as ‘Oakleaf A’ and ‘Oakleaf B’. Some early tunics were produced with sleeve eagles, and others with loops for shoulder insignia, despite the fact that only special sleeve rank insignia was allowed at this point in the war.
Tunics produced later in the war were manufactured out of materials such as herringbone twill. The interior of the tunic has little lining, although strips of rayon were added under the arms and were also fashioned into belt hook suspenders. The tunic interior also features a pocket for medical dressing on the lower right side.
The tunics were often produced in the 'Dot' camouflage pattern, which was developed in 1943.
The M44 tunic can easily be confused with the tunic issued to Police combat troops, although the police combat tunic has breast pockets with pleats, belt suspenders with three holes, and removable buttons.
