Germany, RLB. A Reich Air Protection League (RLB) I Class Honour Cross
(Luftschutz-Ehrenzeichen I. Klasse Kreuz). Instituted 30 January 1938. (1938-1945 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Ruppert Cross with pebbled arms, the obverse with a central mobile swastika, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR VERDIENSTE IM LUFTSCHUTZ” (“FOR MERIT IN AIR PROTECTION”), the reverse with a date of “1939” on the three and nine o’clock arms, unmarked, measuring 39.41 mm (w) x 42.73 mm (h), weighing 26.0 grams (inclusive of ribbon), in extremely fine condition.
The Air Defence Honour Badge was founded by Adolf Hitler on January 30, 1936. The Badge was established in two classes and was conferred upon members of the National Air Raid Protection League (Reichsluftschutzbund), the Security and Assistance Service (Sicherheits und Hilfsdienst), the Factory Protection Police (Werkschutz), and the Order Police (Ordnungspolizei) who participated in the protection and defence of the German population during air raids.
The decoration was awarded to both men and women.
The I Class Cross was conferred for especially exceptional service, while the II Class was awarded for meritorious and honourable service.
