Physical Description
A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the arched inscription ‘LOUISE ELEONORE V.H.Z.S.O.V.U.L.R.’ (Verwitwete Herzogin zu Sachsen Ober-Vormünderin und Landes-Regentin, Widowed Duchess of Saxony Legal Guardian and state regent) at the top and the inscription ‘DEM VERTHEIDIGER DES VATERLANDES 1814’ (‘to the defender of the fatherland’) in the centre. The reverse features a Maltese cross surrounded by an oak leaf wreath that is tied at the bottom. On a loop for suspension, on a white ribbon with three broad green stripes.
History
The Campaign Medal was instituted in October 1814 by Duchess Louise Leonore, who was the mother of the reigning duke. The medal was conferred upon military personnel who participated in the Campaign of 1814/1815 against Napoleon.
The obverse of the medal features an inscription which translates to “To the defender of the fatherland”. The reverse of the medal features a Maltese Cross surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves.
