A George’s cross with split pebbled arms and narrow raised smooth borders, constructed of silver, gold, and diamonds, with an emerald-encrusted laurel wreath attached to the obverse. The cross is in silver. The obverse centre medallion is in gold, pebbled, and features the crowned monogram ‘CE’, adorned with diamonds. The double medallion ring is smooth. The reverse centre features the Saxon coat of arms with the circular inscription ‘FIDELITER ET CONSTANTER’ (‘loyal and persistent’) followed by a small six-sided star on the medallion ring, as well as a vertical pinback.
The Carl Eduard War Cross was instituted by Duke Carl Eduard of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha on July 19, 1916. It was awarded to those soldiers in the 6th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 95 who had received the Iron Cross 1st Class. The decoration did not have to be returned upon the death of the recipient.
The decoration and the case it came in were supplied by court jewellers Bury & Leonhardt in Hanau.
