A smooth circular medal with a raised border, constructed of bronze gilt. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of Duke Ernst with the circular inscription ‘ERNST HERZOG V. SACHSEN-ALTENBURG’ inside two borders, with a small five-leaf rosette at the bottom. At the neck is the manufacturer’s mark ‘D’ for Münzanstalt R. Diller, Dresden. The reverse features the inscription ‘ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE BEI DER ÜBERSCHWEMMUNG DES SAALEGEBIETES AM 24./25. NOVEMBER 1890 ERFOLGR. GELEISTETE HILFE’. On a loop for suspension, on a green ribbon.
The Medal for the Saale District Flood was instituted by Duke Ernst I on April 30, 1891. It was awarded to individuals who demonstrated outstanding bravery by rendering aid during the 1890 flood.
The medal was only awarded 39 times.
