A smooth circular medal with a raised border, constructed of silver. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Duke Ernst. At the neck is the stamp cutter’s signature ‘M. HASEROTH’. The reverse features the inscription ‘ERNST HERZOG VON SACHSEN-ALTENBURG 3. AUGUST 1903’. On a loop for suspension, on a green ribbon with broad white side stripes.
The Medal for 50 Years of Reign was instituted by Duke Ernst I to commemorate his 50th ruling year. The medal was was only conferred on August 3, 1903, the day of its institution, and it was awarded to members of the ducal court, civil servants, the officers and non-commissioned officers of the 8th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 153, and others who were close to the court.
A small number of Silver Medals were awarded to Generals, high-ranking officials, and women of high social standing. The Silver Medal was only awarded 40 times.
